Quote of the Day | 03.27.15

In a creative, supportive environment, people are less threatened by their own mistakes and by others’ failures. Problems are viewed through a different lens: they become opportunities for growth, not causes for condemnation.

Tuesday Thots | The Biggest Mistakes A Leader Can Make

I saw this video posted over on Scott Williams’ blog, Big Is The New Small. The video is from Harvard Publishing and worth the seven minutes to view it. Here is a summary of what nine leaders think are the biggest mistakes a leader can make.

Bill George – Professor, Harvard Business School
Putting their self-interest ahead of the interests of the institution or organization they run.

Evan Wittenberg – Head of Global Leadership Development, Google, Inc.
Betraying trust.

Dr. Ellen Langer – Professor, Harvard University
Being certain.

Andrew Pettigrew – Professor, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford
To not live up to their own values.

Gianpiero Petriglieri – Affiliate Professor of Organizational Behavior, INSEAD
To be so overly enamoured with their vision that they lose all capacity for self-doubt (when the vision moves from passion to obsession).

Carl Sloane – Professor Emeritus, Harvard Business School
Personal arrogance & hubris.

Jonathan Doochin – Leadership Institute @ Harvard College
Acting too fast – executing before thinking through the issue.

Scott Snook – Associate Professor, Harvard Business School
Making it all about the leader & being  inconsistent, not authentic, lacking integrity.

Daisy Wageman Dowling – Executive Director, Leadership Development @ Morgan Stanley
To not be self-reflective.

What are your thoughts? Which of these do you think is the biggest mistake a leader can make? Is there a huge mistake a leader can make that’s not mentioned?

Tuesday Thots :: 09.14.10

Read this last week by Perry Noble.  Just sat through a meeting recently where a leader had made several mistakes but was hedging the entire time not willing to take ownership of the mistakes or apologize for them.  Perry tackles the issue head-on without pulling punches in this brief blog article.  The four reasons are listed here but you’ll want to jump over to his blog to read all of it.

Why Do Leaders Refuse To Admit They Are Wrong?

Four Reasons…

#1 – Pride
