Leadership 101

simple insights for those in leadership

Tuesday Thots | Four Leadership Trends :: Collaborative Leadership / Team Leadership

This is part 2 in a 4-week series of leadership trends that I taught recently at a leadership class.

Collaborative Leadership / Team Leadership

This type of leadership stands in contrast to the old “Top-Down” leadership paradigm.  In this style of leadership, leaders and followers work together as a team, collaborating, contributing together, exchanging ideas and power and responsibility as needed.

Why this change from “Top-Down Leadership” to “Collaborative/Team Leadership”?

  • It’s biblical.
    Romans 12:4-8; 1st Corinthians 12:1-31
  • Changes in generational culture.  Current generations (Busters & Millennials) don’t trust leadership after spending years watching leaders look out for themselves and lead without integrity..

What does “collaborative/team leadership” look like?

  • Groups working together for a common goal.
  • Positions within the group based on talents, abilities, gifts, experience.
  • Allows for and empowers everyone to think, experiment, create, and lead.
  • Requires a “we-opic” vision as opposed to a “me-opic” mind-set.
  • Requires fluid, open communication.
  • Allows for and requires involvement of everyone.
  • Requires every person to lead and follow.
  • Requires honest, open, and trusting relationships and a respect for each other and each other’s opinions.
  • Develops interdependence.
  • The leaders job: To equip and empower those under him to do the work and then gives them the credit for the accomplishments.

What are you seeing?  Is this trend accurate?  Is it better? Worse? What does it mean for organizations that haven’t changed the way the structure their leadership?
